Lawn Edgers

If you want a clean edge on walkways, driveways, patios and along gardens, a lawn edger is a must-have tool. There are a variety of edgers available and it’s important to choose the right tool for your needs.

There are two types of manual edgers, the fixed-blade and the rolling model. The fixed blade variety utilizes a half-moon shaped blade with a flattened top that allows you to put your weight in the blade, cutting a sharp edge along the turf. The rolling model has a circular blade aligned with a wheel mounted on its side. As you roll the wheel along the pavement the blade cuts any grass hanging over the pavement.

For bigger jobs, a motorized edger is more appropriate. Motorized edgers may be either gas or electric powered and typically have a sharp circular blade attached to a motorized wheel attached to a long handle, similar to a weed trimmer. A trigger-type or button control allows the operator to rotate the wheel and blade as it is run along the edge of a paved area where it meets the grass. These edgers also often feature a guide wheel to ensure a cleaner, straighter cut. If you already own a weed trimmer you may be able to purchase an edging attachment to avoid having to buy additional equipment.

Work when the soil is moist for the neatest, most attractive edge. Hard, compact soil is difficult to properly edge. Be sure to clear the area to be edged first. Debris will block the edging blade and may cause dangerous jumping or damage the blade. If you’re establishing the boundary of a new garden or edging another area that’s never been edged before, the most effective way to begin is with a manual edger. You may then follow with a motorized edger for future maintenance. Although this method requires more elbow grease, your work will be rewarded with a well-manicured look.
